Facet-inducing inequalities for chromatic scheduling polytopes based on covering cliques
نویسندگان
چکیده
Chromatic scheduling polytopes arise as solution sets of the bandwidth allocation problem in certain radio access networks supplying wireless access to voice/data communication networks to customers with individual communication demands. This bandwidth allocation problem is a special chromatic scheduling problem; both problems are N P-complete and, furthermore, there exist no polynomial-time algorithms with a fixed quality guarantee for them. As algorithms based on cutting planes are shown to be successful for many other combinatorial optimization problems, the goal is to apply such methods to the bandwidth allocation problem. For that, knowledge on the associated polytopes is required. The present paper contributes to this issue, introducing new classes of valid inequalities based on variations and extensions of the covering-clique inequalities presented in [J. Marenco, Chromatic scheduling polytopes coming from the bandwidth allocation problem in point-to-multipoint radio access systems, Ph.D. Thesis, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2005; J. Marenco, A. Wagler, Chromatic scheduling polytopes coming from the bandwidth allocation problem in point-to-multipoint radio access systems, Annals of Operations Research 150-1 (2007) 159–175]. We discuss conditions ensuring that these inequalities define facets of chromatic scheduling polytopes, and we show that the associated separation problems areN P-complete. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. Chromatic scheduling polytopes coming from the bandwidth allocation problem in point-to-multipoint radio access systems
Point-to-Multipoint systems are one kind of radio systems supplying wireless access to voice/data communication networks. Such systems have to be run using a certain frequency spectrum, which typically causes capacity problems. Hence it is, on the one hand, necessary to reuse frequencies but, on the other hand, no interference must be caused thereby. This leads to the bandwidth allocation probl...
متن کاملA polyhedral approach to single-machine scheduling problems
We report new results for a time-indexed formulation of nonpreemptive singlemachine scheduling problems. We give complete characterizations of all facet inducing inequalities with integral coefficients and right-hand side 1 or 2 for the convex hull of the set of feasible partial schedules, i.e., schedules in which not all jobs have to be started. Furthermore, we identify conditions under which ...

Chromatic scheduling polytopes arise as solution sets of the bandwidth allocation problem in certain radio access networks, which supply wireless access to voice/data communication for customerswith fixed antennas and individual demands. This problem is N P -complete and, moreover, does not admit polynomial-time approximation algorithms with a fixed quality guarantee. As algorithms based on cut...
متن کاملColoring planar Toeplitz graphs and the stable set polytope
Cliques and odd cycles are well known to induce facet-de.ning inequalities for the stable set polytope. In graph coloring cliques are a class of n-critical graphs whereas odd cycles represent the class of 3-critical graphs. In the .rst part of this paper we generalize both notions to (Kn \ e)-cycles, a new class of n-critical graphs, and discuss some implications for the class of in.nite planar...
متن کاملOn the combinatorial structure of chromatic scheduling polytopes
Chromatic scheduling polytopes arise as solution sets of the bandwidth allocation problem in certain radio access networks, supplying wireless access to voice/data communication networks for customers with individual communication demands. To maintain the links, only frequencies from a certain spectrum can be used, which typically causes capacity problems. Hence it is necessary to reuse frequen...
